Matthew laughed at Nicolette saying she missed him. SHE missed HIM? “You missed me? That’s a funny thing to say considering what you did..” He was trying to hold back the anger, the anger that he didn’t want to her see. But he knew he couldn’t last long if she wanted to act like nothing was wrong. “You do that. Then you flee back to England, and come back, and just expect to say you miss me? I don’t know what you want from me, exactly. Tell me. Explain to me.” Matthew says in his cocky sarcastic tone. He’s hoping she gets the message. He sees her fiddling and he knows that she’s nervous. Good. He wants her to be. He wants her to know that it could not just be happy moments from the second she walks in. He needs to know.
Nicolette sighed when she heard the sarcastic tone of his voice. She knew this would be his reaction, yet she didn’t want to believe herself that it wasn’t going to be perfectly fine and they would end up together again. “I know what I did to you,” she replied, thinking back to the mistakes she had made in college. “I think you know why I’m here, also.” Nicolette replied. There was obviously nothing here for her in New York besides him. She was willing to talk it out, if they could. Matthew looked way too damaged to ever forgive her, but Nicolette wouldn’t lose hope. She noticed the satisfied look on his face when he saw her playing with the edge of her coat. Nicolette let go of the fabric immediately, she didn’t want him to see that she was nervous.
Matthew was sitting on his couch in his apartment, drinking. He needed to drink to get rid of the day, to get rid of the memories. He couldn’t even stand to think of Nicolette in a positive way. She had done too much to hurt him, and didn’t seem to mind at all. He can still remember the day he found out she had cheated. He hadn’t felt that pain since he was a child, and he refused to feel it again. He heard the knock on his door and was startled at first. “Shit..” he muttered to himself. Here goes nothing. He opened the door and there she was. It was hard to deny she wasn’t beautiful, but he couldn’t bring himself to think that at the time. “Come in” he said, and she walked into the apartment hallway and they carried on into his living room area. He didn’t know what she wanted, and why she was back in town, but he needed to know. He needed to see what she wanted and why she came back. He was waiting for a good response.
“Matthew,” Nicolette nodding, greeting him at the door. She walked into the living room of his apartment, folding the fabric of her coat back and forth between her fingers the entire way. It was still awkward seeing him after all this time, especially considering the pain she had caused him. Nicolette knew it was completely her fault the relationship wasn’t working and yet she still pinned the half of it on Matthew. She led herself to the living room couch and sat down, legs crossed and her hands resting on her knees. “So,” Nicolette began sheepishly, “I’ve missed you.” She gave a weak smile and shrugged, trying to get the talk off to a good start, although the growing feeling of dread sitting in the pit of her stomach told her that it probably wasn’t going to last for long. Nicolette knew he would have questions and lots of them asking to explain herself for her sudden appearance in New York.

Nicolette walked up the staircase to Matthew’s apartment door, feeling more nervous than she usually would facing a situation like she did now. She wrapped her coat tighter around her body in an act to make herself calm and comfortable. It only provided a small amount of comfort as when she neared his door, Nicolette was practically shaking. She wasn’t one to be scared easily. Coming from a ‘proper’ family, she was taught what to do in each social event she was in. This was much more different though. Something about Matthew made her nervous and maybe it was just the fact the she was afraid to face the possible consequences of their past relationship. She didn’t know, but Nicolette took a deep breath before she knocked lightly on his apartment door.
Let’s talk then. Come over to my place. Tonight.
Really? If you insist, see you tonight.

Uh.. probably not.
Well, it’s not my place to judge. I’ve done some pretty fucked up things in my relationships. But I do have a particular disdain for people who hurt my brother.
Understandable enough. Brother and sister relationships, you know.

Can we? That’s all on you, nic.
Look, Matthew. I didn’t ask that many things of you.

I’m sure you can come up with some reasons.
Can’t we just have one conversation without you getting mad?

I am Matthew’s sister, after all. And we’re close. I have to admit, they weren’t the best of things.
I didn’t really expect them to be good, to be honest.
